FlowTek® Overview

Software support for the flow measurement field technician

Upstream oil and gas facilities and downstream pipeline operations are required to periodically inspect, verify and report measurements from flow meters. In Alberta, the Alberta Energy Reulator - AER's Directive 17 provides regulatory requirements for measurement points used for AER accounting and reporting. Elsewhere, government agencies have similar requirements for flow measurement by energy producers and those involved in various industrial processing fields.

To help meet the needs of flow measurement field technicians in gathering information and reporting against these requirements, Calsim Technology Inc. has developed FlowTek™ .

With FlowTek®, a technician creates a tag record that describes the meter type, characteristics, and flowing conditions. A variety of fluid property methods are employed to support the calculation of predicted flow rates and other values required to verify the accurate operation of equipment. Reports are easily generated containing the meter data as well as calculated results and inspection information.

SteamCalc

SteamCalc is a utility for devices running the Blackberry 10 OS. It can be used to calculate thermodynamic properties of water and steam using the IAPWS-IF97 standard. It is capable of calculating specific volume, specific enthalpy, specific internal energy, specific entropy, specific isobaric heat capacity, and speed of sound. Several calculation types exist including 'T, P', 'T, saturated liquid', 'T, saturated vapour', 'P, saturated liquid', and 'P, saturated vapour'.

Instrument Toolkit®

Calsim Technology was contracted with the long-term development, testing, and ongoing support of the Instrument Toolkit software, a solution that takes the complication out of ordering Rosemount products. The Windows-based software allows the user to record application information and process conditions, and to run difficult, time consuming calculations required to properly select an instrument and components. The Instrument Toolkit allows the user to select a valid Rosemount or Micro Motion model number and custom configure the flow, level, pressure, and temperature transmitters.

Using the Instrument Toolkit ensures that the customer receives the correct model to meet their application needs. This software, which was first designed in 1997 for Rosemount and affiliated companies and partners, has dramatically improved order efficiency and reduced the time spent for the end user to configure and order the correct components. The Instrument Toolkit has a desktop and web application available, depending upon the need and requirement of the sales individual.

The Instrument Toolkit software accommodates over ten thousand parts and components, which all require an industrial aptitude and precise calculation to correctly configure the exact parts for the application in the process control area. Calsim Technology has developed, tested, and supported each version of the Instrument Toolkit since inception. Flowel

Initially developed in 1993; Flowel is a software application that accurately sizes primary differential pressure flow measurement devices using industry standards, offering innovative features that improve cost-effectiveness. In addition, Flowel 4 includes capabilities to calculate the fluid density of steam and natural gas, and provides methods for determining gas viscosity isentropic exponent, vapor pressure, and bubblepoint. Initially developed by the Hydrocarbon and Energy Industry Center, a division of Emerson Process Management. Now owned by Emerson?s specialist measurement services company METCO.

The first version of the software, Flowel 3, included a graphical user interface programmed in Powerbuilder and a Sysbase database. In 2003 Calsim Technology was contracted by Emerson Process Management to further support prior and new versions, and the software was redesigned to include a more intuitive user interface and database, and altered to include new and revised industry standards, such as ISO 5167 (2003) and ASME MFC 14M, resulting in Flowel 4. Calsim Technology has provided Flowel 4 second-level technical support since 2003. In the end, Flowel is highly effective in the design process by assisting in the determination of equipment and components in a complex gathering and processing system for oil and gas.
